What Is a Quad Helix

What Is a Quad Helix and Why Do You Need One?

Do your (or your child’s) upper teeth tuck inside the lower teeth when biting down? Or does the upper jaw look too narrow for a full, natural smile? A quad helix might be the answer.

A quad helix is a small orthodontic appliance that fits against the roof of the mouth. It has four spring coils, which is how it got its name, and these coils slowly widen the upper jaw over time. It’s one of the most effective and easiest ways to correct a narrow arch, fix a crossbite, and make room for crowded teeth.

Braces straighten teeth. A quad helix does something different. It widens the upper jaw so your teeth have room to come in straight and your bite lines up properly. Our office is based in Fort Lauderdale and welcomes patients from neighborhoods across South Florida.

Why a Quad Helix Matters

Why a Quad Helix Matters

A narrow upper jaw, a crossbite, or crowded teeth won’t fix themselves. A quad helix solves the problem at its source and protects your oral health for life.

Corrects Crossbites

Widens the upper arch so your upper and lower teeth meet properly.

Makes Room for Crowded Teeth

Expands the jaw so permanent teeth can come in straight, often without the need for extractions.

Supports Better Breathing

A wider arch gives the tongue more space and a clearer airway, which can improve sleep.

Works Around the Clock

Dr. Freeman activates the appliance before placing it, so it keeps working without any daily adjustments at home.

When Do You Need a Quad Helix

When Do You Need a Quad Helix?

A quad helix works best when the upper jaw is still growing, which is why age and timing matter.

Ages 6 to 12 (The Best Window)

This is the sweet spot for quad helix treatment. The upper jaw bones haven’t fused yet, so the appliance can widen them easily and the results last.

Teens

A quad helix can still work well for teens whose jaws are finishing their growth. Dr. Freeman will check where you or your child are in development at your first visit.

Adults (Select Cases)

In adults, the upper jaw bones have fused, so a quad helix won’t change the jaw size much. It can still help with molar rotation, minor tooth movement, or as part of a wider plan alongside braces or Invisalign.

Placement is painless, and there are no shots or drilling involved. You may feel mild pressure and a little tongue soreness for the first few days, which fades quickly with warm salt water rinses.

Most quad helix treatments take between 3 and 6 months. Some cases run a little longer depending on how much expansion your bite needs.

Yes, in certain cases. In most adults the upper jaw bones have fused, so a quad helix is usually used for molar rotation, minor tooth movement, or alongside braces or Invisalign rather than major jaw widening.

No, it’s cemented to the upper back molars. That means it works 24/7 without you having to remember to put it in.

A mild lisp is common during the first few days as the tongue adjusts to the appliance. Reading out loud at home speeds up the adjustment, and normal speech usually returns within a week.

Almost! You’ll just need to avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods like gum, caramel, ice, whole apples, and tough bread. Everything else on your usual menu is still fair game.

Most patients visit our Fort Lauderdale office every 6 to 8 weeks during treatment. These quick visits let Dr. Freeman monitor your progress and make any small adjustments as needed.

In most cases, yes. The quad helix handles the width and spacing, then braces or Invisalign step in afterward to straighten the teeth themselves.
