Adult Braces: Is It Ever Too Late to Straighten Your Smile?

If you have spent years wishing your teeth were a little straighter but assumed braces were only for kids and teens, here is some good news: you are never too old for a healthier, more confident smile.

Adults now make up a large share of the patients we treat at Freeman Orthodontics, and today's options are more comfortable and more discreet than most people expect. Here is what to know before you get started.

It is more common than you think

Straightening teeth as an adult is no longer unusual. Many people finally pursue treatment once life settles down, or because a shifting bite or crowding has started to affect how they clean their teeth. Whatever the reason, healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age.

Your options as an adult

Modern orthodontics gives you choices that fit your lifestyle and your comfort level:

At your consultation, Dr. Freeman will talk through the trade-offs of each and recommend the approach that fits your goals.

What is different about treating adults

Adult jaws have finished growing, so some corrections take a little more time than they would for a teenager. Existing dental work such as crowns, bridges, or implants is also factored into your plan, and we coordinate with your regular dentist when needed. None of this is a barrier. It simply means your plan is tailored to you.

How long does it take?

Every smile is different, but many adults complete treatment in roughly 12 to 24 months. Simple cases can move faster, and consistent wear, especially with aligners, keeps things on track.

Is it worth it?

Beyond a smile you feel good about, straighter teeth are easier to brush and floss, which supports healthier gums and a more comfortable bite for years to come. For most of our adult patients, the confidence that comes with the result is the part they talk about most.

Ready when you are

There is no deadline on a great smile. If you have been thinking about it, a quick conversation is the easiest first step. We will answer your questions and show you exactly what treatment would look like for you.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old for braces?

No. Healthy teeth and gums can be moved at almost any age, and we regularly treat patients well into their 60s and 70s.

Are clear aligners as effective as braces for adults?

For most common concerns like crowding and spacing, aligners work beautifully. More complex bites may be better treated with braces, which is exactly what your consultation helps determine.

How long will adult treatment take?

Many adults finish in about 12 to 24 months, depending on the complexity of the case and how consistently aligners are worn.

Will treatment get in the way of work and social life?

Rarely. Clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible, and ceramic braces blend with your teeth, so most people barely notice them.

Does dental insurance cover adult orthodontics?

Many plans include an orthodontic benefit that applies to adults. Our team is happy to check your coverage and walk you through the options on our Financing and Insurance page.

Is it really worth getting braces as an adult?

Beyond a smile you love, straighter teeth are easier to keep clean and can support healthier gums and a more comfortable bite for years to come.
